Image to PDF vs OCR: Make Scans Readable and Searchable
By Tabulyn
Image-to-PDF conversion packages images into pages. OCR adds recognized text so a scanned PDF can be searched. Converting a PDF page to JPG creates a picture of its layout, not selectable text.
Capture a clear page before converting
Use even lighting, avoid shadows, and keep the camera parallel to the paper. Include the whole page without cutting off text near the edge. Review each image before uploading; converting a blurred photo into a PDF does not restore lost detail.
Scan to PDF accepts JPG and PNG images and can request the rear camera on supported mobile browsers. It assembles your images rather than promising automatic edge detection or perspective correction. Arrange the images in reading order before conversion.
Choose page size and margins deliberately
Fit each image keeps the page based on that image. A4 or US Letter is useful when a recipient expects a consistent paper size. Select orientation and margins, then inspect that text is not unexpectedly small on the finished page.
Both JPG to PDF and Scan to PDF put images into a document. They do not, by themselves, recognize the words in a photograph. Keep your original images until you have checked that every page appears correctly.
Use OCR when you need searchable text
Tabulyn's OCR interface currently offers English. Searchable output includes a recognized text layer, but recognition can make mistakes, especially with blur, handwriting, small print, or unusual layouts. Search for a known phrase and verify important numbers against the visible page.
Searchable text is not the same as an editable Word document or a structured spreadsheet. OCR does not guarantee that table rows and columns can be extracted correctly. For spreadsheet work, a digital PDF exported from the source software is usually the better input.
Full-page JPG and embedded-image extraction are different
PDF-to-JPG page conversion renders a complete page, including text, shapes, and pictures. Enter a page list when you only need selected pages and choose JPG quality according to your intended use.
Embedded-image extraction retrieves image objects stored inside the PDF. It does not capture the whole page, and the extracted files may have formats other than JPG. Use page conversion for a faithful page picture; use extraction when you need the stored images themselves.
